1. Native of Shanghai, Ju Wenjun started playing chess at seven.

2. In 2004, at just 13, she won a bronze medal in the Asian Women’s Chess Championship and qualified for her first Women’s World Championship.

3. She won the Women’s Chinese Chess Championship twice, in 2010 and 2014.

4. In November 2014, she became China’s 31st grandmaster and the 31st woman to hold the title.

5. She was a member of the gold-winning Chinese national women’s team in the 42nd Chess Olympiad in 2016, the Women’s World Team Chess Championship in 2009 and 2011, the Women’s Asian Nations Chess Cup in 2012, 2014 and 2016, the Olympiad in 2018, and the 2010 Asian Games.

6. In 2015, she graduated from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

7. In March 2017, she became the sixth (and most recent) woman to achieve a rating above 2600.

8. In December 2017, Ju won the Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship in Riyadh, and then again in St. Petersburg in December 2018.

9. In May 2018, she became the 17th Women’s World Chess Champion, defeating her compatriot Tan Zhongyi. It was her 7th attempt at the title.

10. She has defended her title twice. In a 64-player knockout tournament in 2018, she won every round leading up to the final, where she overcame Kateryna Lagno in a tiebreak. In the 2020 match against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina, Ju Wenjun retained her title thanks to her win in the third game of the rapid tiebreak.
