Overview

The Communications Department Graphic Designer is responsible for producing, managing and directing all graphic and print design, social media design work, photography, and promotional assets. Creating article layouts and covers for the magazines Chess Life and Chess Life Kids will represent about 50% of the work. Some design work for other US Chess departments is required, with the goal of ensuring the consistent design, branding and articulation of US Chess’ desired image and position internally and externally.  Some travel may be required. US Chess provides comprehensive benefits including Paid Time Off, Health Insurance, and Retirement. The salary range is between $45,000 and $55,000 per year.

Special Note: The successful candidate need not reside in the vicinity of US Chess headquarters in St. Louis, MO. They may fulfill their duties from St. Louis or anywhere within the continental United States.   

 

Primary Relationships

The position primarily functions within the Communications Department and reports to the Chess Life Magazine Editor in the interim. The role supports activities in other departments. 

 

Major Areas of Responsibility 

Print magazines

  • Creating Chess Life and Chess Life Kids layouts in InDesign from sources

  • Selecting photos for print

  • Creating art assets as needed for print

  • Hiring freelance photographers and graphic artists as needed

  • Directing photo shoots remotely as needed

 

Governance and Internal Documents

  • In consultation with the Chess Life / Chess Life Kids editor, implementing an overall design approach for documents including (but not limited to) the Delegates Call and Annual Report, and incorporating source text documents into a graphic layout

  • Coordinating and harmonizing the appearance of all US Chess print and electronic materials such as letterheads, logos, brochures, etc.

  • Chess Life Online

  • Creating / sourcing art for news articles as needed

 

Social Media

  • Creating / sourcing art for all our social media platforms as needed

 

Inter-Departmental Work

Occasional work for:

  • Events: Creating logos, forms, and other assets, including awards, trophies, and medals; assisting with hiring of photographers / videographers at US Chess events

  • Membership: Creating/revising forms; creating assets for membership marketing campaigns

  • Development: Creating/revising assets such as Case for Support and for fundraising campaigns

  • Programs: Creating/revising assets for various programmatic areas 

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in graphic design

  • Strong knowledge of design principles

  • Strong knowledge of, and experience with, the Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, and Canva

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, the Microsoft Office Suite

  • Strong creative skills

  • Experience overseeing the design and production of print materials and publications

  • Commitment to working with cross-functional teams

  • Strong oral and written communications skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time

  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure

  • Long- and short-range planning skills

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of personalities

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or art production.  

 

Preferred:

  • Worked in and with print and digital magazines

  • Created outstanding brands and logos

  • Has a deep portfolio of design projects

  • Understands marketing principal
