Der Dadaist und Surrealist Man Ray (1890–1976) verband Kunst und Schach wie kaum ein anderer. Der New Yorker Kurator Larry List hat zwanzig Jahre lang alle schachbezogenen Werke des Künstlers recherchiert. Sein prachtvoll bebildertes Buch Permanent Attraction zeigt rund 350 Abbildungen und erzählt zugleich Man Rays Lebensweg zwischen New York, Paris und Hollywood.
Seit 1914 entwarf Man Ray zahlreiche Schachspiele – von einfachen Holzfiguren bis zu luxuriösen Bronzeausgaben. Sein erstes vollständiges Set von 1920 gilt als erstes abstraktes Schachspiel der Moderne. In Kalifornien wurden seine Entwürfe zu begehrten Sammlerobjekten, besessen etwa von Max Ernst, Igor Strawinsky und Josef von Sternberg. Ein Exemplar erzielte 2024 über 200.000 Euro.
Man Ray was a painter, photographer, gizmo-maker, draftsman, filmmaker, chess-set designer, writer, poet, editor, publisher, adman, cartographer, prankster. He also had a habit of inventing niche art forms—one of which is now on display at the Met.
Neben den Spielen schuf Man Ray Skulpturen, Gemälde und Fotografien mit Schachbezug, darunter ein Porträt von Alexander Aljechin und die Bronzefigur Le Fou (1970).
Harry Schaack betont, dass das Buch nicht nur eine Werkschau ist, sondern auch zeigt, wie eng das Schach mit der Avantgarde der Moderne verbunden war.
