Freestyle Chess adds another headline moment to the calendar, with the first official FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship set to take place in Weissenhaus, Germany from 13-15 February. The event marks a new chapter for top-level chess, introducing a world title contested in a format where opening positions are randomly generated, placing creativity, adaptability, and over-the-board problem-solving at the centre of the competition.
Hosted at the luxury Weissenhaus resort, the championship brings together an elite field of players who have qualified through a combination of invitations and competitive pathways. With no established opening theory to rely on, Freestyle Chess shifts the balance toward pure understanding and originality, offering a fresh test even for the world’s most experienced players.
Six players qualified based on their results during the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour:
• Magnus Carlsen
• Levon Aronian
• Fabiano Caruana
• Vincent Keymer
• Arjun Erigaisi
• Javokhir Sindarov
Two additional participants were selected separately. Freestyle Chess nominated Hans Niemann following his strong performance at the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam event in Las Vegas. The final spot was decided via an Online Qualification Tournament where Nodirbek Abdusattorov emerged as the winner to complete the field.
The FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship will take place this month, with global attention focused on how the world’s best adapt to unfamiliar positions and new strategic challenges. As FIDE continues to explore innovative formats alongside its classical cycle, Freestyle Chess stands out as a bold addition to the championship landscape.
