Freestyle Chess Kicks Off Landmark Week in Las Vegas
Jan Henric Buettner opens Grand Slam event and Chesstival at Wynn
Las Vegas, NV – July 13, 2025 – With an opening press conference at Wynn Las Vegas, Freestyle Chess has officially launched its first-ever U.S. event: a full week of chess, celebrity, and competition. The week begins with the Chesstival on July 13, followed by the $750,000 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam from July 16 to 20.
The Chesstival brings together NBA stars such as Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, and Tony Snell, teaming up with the world’s chess elite for a light-hearted but competitive pro-am chess showdown. Chesstival also features the NBA Blitz Chess Championship that carries a $50,000 charity prize fund.
Given Rose’s investment in Freestyle Chess, linking his Chesstival concept to the Freestyle tour was a logical step. In the Wynn, the NBA stars will play in the same setup that later hosts the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, giving them an opportunity to experience a chess super-tournament environment firsthand.

Chesstival Live StreamSpeaking in the Lafite Ballroom, Freestyle co-founder Jan Henric Buettner welcomed media and guests ahead of a week that expands the global Freestyle Chess tour into uncharted territory. “We have the top eight U.S. players facing off against the top from the rest of the world – a setup that makes the Las Vegas Grand Slam especially exciting,” said Buettner.
The Las Vegas Grand Slam marks a number of firsts for Freestyle Chess: the first Grand Slam on U.S. soil, the first with 16 players, among them the first woman to play a Grand Slam, the first live audience seated near the stage, and the first with live commentary available through silent headsets. The production is designed to bring fans closer than ever – with immersive visuals and a format built for drama.
New format, more pressure
The Las Vegas tournament introduces a 16-player format with a double elimination structure. After an initial group stage with rapid time control (10 minutes plus 10 seconds per move), the players enter a championship or placement bracket depending on their results. Players eliminated from the top bracket cannot return to the final – at most, they can finish in third place. All knockout rounds will be played with a 30+30 classical time control, counting toward the official Freestyle rating.
The format guarantees that every match has consequences – win and move forward, lose twice and you’re out. It’s a structure that intensifies the competition and rewards consistency under pressure.
After three events, world number one and Freestyle Chess co-founder Magnus Carlsen leads the Freestyle Grand Slam pack with 65 points, followed by Fabiano Caruana (39) and Vincent Keymer (37). These two as well as Hikaru Nakamura (28) in fourth place will need strong results in Las Vegas to stay within striking distance. Every match counts – for placement, for Elo, and for qualification to the final in Cape Town.
In parallel, the Freestyle Elo rating continues to evolve. Las Vegas is the first event to use the faster 30+30 classical control, with all 30+30 games contributing to the players’ ratings. Will Carlsen set a new record after being the first to break the 2900 barrier?
Side events, crossover energy and new opportunities
Past Grand Slams have already hosted friendly poker games with players, organizers, and staff after the chess battles. In Las Vegas – the city synonymous with poker and high-stakes drama – poker tournaments will be a regular part of the week’s side program. They deepen the vibrant crossover between chess, entertainment, and fierce competition that Freestyle is aiming to build.
The Las Vegas event also serves as a launchpad for Freestyle Chess’s next phase of growth. It brings together partners and stakeholders interested in shaping the future of the sport.

NBA Star Quinten Post Crowned First Ever NBA Chess Champion at Inaugural Chesstival
Las Vegas, NV – July 14, 2025 – Golden State Warriors forward Quinten Post has claimed the title of first-ever NBA Chess Champion, winning the blitz tournament at the inaugural Chesstival, a unique crossover event co-hosted by Derrick Rose and Freestyle Chess at the Wynn Las Vegas. Post scored an impressive 4.5 out of 5, defeating several top basketball personalities in five fast-paced rounds. His performance earned him the unofficial crown of top chess player in the NBA – and a $25,000 charity donation to Reading Partners, a nonprofit that provides personalized literacy tutoring to elementary school students.
Wearing a checkered shirt to match the mood, Post demonstrated flair and skill, including a stunning rook sacrifice against Chicago Bulls guard Tony Snell in round three. His only draw came against Dallas Mavericks forward Grant Williams in round four. Former Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo finished just behind with 4 points.
While players were on their own during the games, they received grandmaster insight beforehand. The format was fast, fun, and full of surprises – just as Derrick Rose had envisioned when he dreamed up the event.
Grant Williams and Judit Polgar Win Head & Hand
The earlier "Head & Hand" knockout tournament brought basketball stars and chess grandmasters together on the same side of the board. In this format, the grandmaster calls the piece to be played, while the NBA player decides where to move it – all under a 10-minute time control. Communication, instincts, and clock management all played a role.
Early rounds saw early exits for strong teams: Derrick Rose and world number one Magnus Carlsen were knocked out in the quarterfinals, as were Rajon Rondo and world number two Hikaru Nakamura.
The winners: Grant Williams, Dallas Mavericks forward, and former chess World Championship candidate Judit Polgar, who defeated Tony Snell, Chicago Bulls guard, and Fabiano Caruana, world number three, in the final. Polgar praised Williams for his calm timing, while Williams compared the chessboard to the free-throw line. The duo donated their $25,000 prize to the Grant Williams Family Foundation.
Chesstival was held three days before the $750,000 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam and marked a new milestone in bringing chess to a wider audience. "Being able to do this now is unreal, it’s a blessing and it’s just a start," said Rose. The event raised $50,000 for charity.
The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam begins Wednesday, July 16, with 16 of the world’s top players competing in a high-stakes double elimination tournament at Wynn Las Vegas.

Las Vegas, 18 July 2025 – The first Freestyle Chess Grand Slam on U.S. soil will crown a new champion. Hans Niemann and Levon Aronian both won their semifinal matches on Friday at the Wynn Las Vegas, setting up an all-American Grand Final on Sunday with a $200,000 first prize at stake. Neither player has claimed a Grand Slam title before.
Niemann, who had said earlier this week, “I really immersed myself into Freestyle,” proved it on the board. After two tense draws in classical play against Fabiano Caruana, he survived a scare in the first rapid tiebreaker. In the second, he broke through with a clinical attack to clinch the match 2½:1½.
Aronian, who had already knocked out tour leader and world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and world No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura this week, continued his run by defeating Arjun Erigaisi 2:0, winning both classical games without needing tiebreaks.
In the Lower Bracket, where players can still finish as high as third, Carlsen, Nakamura, Wesley So, andPraggnanandhaa Rameshbabu advanced. Carlsen edged Javokhir Sindarov 1½:½, while Nakamura swept Leinier Dominguez 2:0. So escaped some danger against Nodirbek Abdusattorov, drawing two games before pulling away in rapid play, and Praggnanandhaa ended Vincent Keymer’s tournament 1½:½. The four eliminated players – Keymer, Dominguez, Abdusattorov, and Sindarov – share 9th to 12th place.
With the field now down to eight, the event enters its final weekend. Saturday will feature Lower Bracket semifinals, as Carlsen, Nakamura, So, and Praggnanandhaa fight to reach Sunday’s third-place match. Niemann and Aronian will meet Sunday in the Grand Final for the Las Vegas title.
The Las Vegas stop, featuring a $750,000 prize fund, opened Wednesday with two eight-player round robins. Carlsen, winner of the Paris and Karlsruhe legs of the series, failed to qualify for the Upper Bracket and has been battling from below ever since.

Las Vegas, 19 July 2025 – The penultimate day of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam in Las Vegas ended with Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura set to meet in Sunday’s 3rd-place match – a repeat of their showdown in the Paris Grand Slam final, though this time with $160,000 and the last podium spot at stake rather than the title. With Hans Niemann and Levon Aronian already through to the $340,000 Grand Final, the Wynn Las Vegas ballroom focused on the Lower Bracket battles. Four players – Carlsen, Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu – began the day chasing a route back to the podium.
Carlsen’s journey began in dramatic fashion. After a chaotic first-round loss to Praggnanandhaa, the world number one ground down the Indian star to force tiebreaks and then reeled off five consecutive wins – including those over his next opponent Arjun Erigaisi – to reach the match for 3rd.
Nakamura’s route was steadier by comparison. After drawing his opening classical game with Wesley So, he won a miniature to advance, then took down Caruana by winning both blitz tiebreak games after two tight rapid draws.
Sunday will feature these matches:
- Hans Niemann vs. Levon Aronian for the Las Vegas Grand Slam title and $340,000 in total ($200.000 for the winner)
- Magnus Carlsen vs. Hikaru Nakamura – a Paris final rematch – for 3rd place and $160,000 in total
- Placement matches for 5th (Fabiano Caruana vs. Arjun Erigaisi) and 7th (Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu vs. Wesley So)
