·       Fabiano Caruana (United States)
·       Vincent Keymer (Germany)
·       Arjun Erigaisi (India)
·       Levon Aronian (United States)

South Africa welcomes Freestyle Chess

Organized by Freestyle Chess, the South Africa Finals combine world-class competition with a celebration of local chess culture. With the kind support of Chess South Africa and more than twenty clubs from the Cape Town area, the event will transform the region into a meeting point for chess players and fans alike.

Overlooking the Atlantic coast and framed by coastal hills, Grootbos provides a spectacular stage for the world’s most creative players. Magnus Carlsen, Freestyle Chess co-founder, world number one, and tour leader, calls the venue “a perfect ending to an incredible season,” adding that Freestyle Chess “has brought back the feeling of pure discovery – you never know the position, you have to think and create. To finish the tour in such a spectacular setting feels right.”

“Each Freestyle Chess venue has had its own magic,” says Freestyle Chess Founder & CEO Jan Henric Buettner. “Grootbos stands for discovery: a new continent, a new culture, and a new connection to a passionate chess community. It’s the perfect final of a journey that has taken Freestyle Chess around the world.”

Freestyle Chess COO Thomas Harsch about the spirit of the Grand Slam Finals: “Our events are designed to be experiences, not just tournaments. South Africa gives us the chance to connect with new audiences and local clubs who share the same enthusiasm for the game. We’re deeply grateful for the hospitality and support we’ve received – even before it begins.”

The Opening Spectacle – Underwater Chess

Festivities begin on December 4 at Cape Town’s Silo Hotel, where the official press conference will open the Grand Slam Finals at 11:00 a.m. local time – bringing together all eight players, media, and invited guests. Later that day, competitors will quite literally dive into a new dimension of the game during the Underwater Chess exhibition tournament.

Etan Ilfeld, the London-based inventor of Diving Chess and founder of the Mind Sports Olympiad, will serve as advisor for the underwater exhibition at the Silo Hotel. Ilfeld’s underwater variant, created in 2012, has since grown into an international phenomenon with annual world championships in London and national events in Germany, Poland, Austria, and the Netherlands. Michal Mazurkiewicz, reigning World Diving Chess Champion, will attend to lend his expertise, while Hans Niemann has already announced his ambition: “I’m not just here to win the Freestyle Chess Finals – I plan to become the first Freestyle Chess Underwater Champion.”

That evening, the players will move to the Grand Africa Café & Beach for the Welcome Beach Party and the live drawing of lots for the Round Robin stage. The following day, the tournament’s guests and players will gather in Stanford for a Welcome Reception and Dinner at Grootbos, attended by South African dignitaries.

The Competition – Daily Public Viewing

The Freestyle Chess Finals follow the Grand Slam’s established structure: a Round Robin rapid stage (10 + 5) followed by three knockout days (30 + 15) to decide the champion. For the first time, tour points will also be awarded for the Round Robin standings – from eight down to one – while points for the Finals are doubled.

Heading into South Africa, Carlsen leads the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour with 80 points, followed by Fabiano Caruana (49) and Vincent Keymer (39) – both within striking distance. Sebastian Siebrecht, Tournament Director of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Finals: “With tour points doubled, nothing is settled. It’s the race among the best of the best; and in Freestyle Chess, every new position can turn the standings upside down.”

From December 8 to 11, fans can follow the action live in Cape Town at a venue yet to be announced, which will feature daily public viewing and live commentary throughout the tournament. Andre Lewaks, President of Chess South Africa, said the federation is proud to support the event and its organizers: “It’s a privilege to host the world’s best players on our soil. Chess South Africa appreciates the spirit of collaboration and the opportunity this brings to our local clubs and fans.”

During the tournament, Freestyle Chess will run two parallel livestreams. The Pro Stream will feature Peter Leko, Judit Polgar, and Niclas Huschenbeth providing expert commentary and analysis, while the Community Stream with Tania SachdevDavid Howell, and James “Dash” Patterson will bring a more relaxed and interactive look at the games and atmosphere. Due to limited space at Grootbos, there will be no ticket sales for spectators.

Local Chess Clubs and Welcome Reception

In the hours after the press conference, and in parallel with Diving Chess, several finalists plan to visit the University of the Western Cape where they will meet players from local chess clubs in the Cape Town area. The visit is not part of a structured media program, but selected coverage can be arranged on request through the Freestyle Chess media team. On December 5, a Welcome Reception for students and regional representatives will take place in Stanford. Media coverage is possible and will be coordinated individually after registration.

Public Viewing at the Waterfront

Hans Niemann Diving Chess Cape Town 2025 Champion

Cape Town, 4 December 2025. Hans Niemann (USA) became the Diving Chess Cape Town 2025 Champion on Thursday after beating Fabiano Caruana (USA) in the final of an underwater chess event held at the Silo Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa. Javkohir Sindarov (Uzbekistan), the recent FIDE World Cup winner, won the match for third place against Vidit Gujrathi (India). The event was the first ever Freestyle Diving Chess Championship.

Players made their moves on a small chess set placed 110 centimeters deep, on the bottom of the Silo Hotel’s beautiful rooftop pool. Each time a player moved and came out of the water to catch some air, the opponent had to take a dive instantly and make their move.

From the pool, Niemann proudly showed his medal to the applause of local supporters, before taking up Diving Chess World Champion Michal Mazurkiewicz next. The Polish player won a rook and pawn for a bishop due to a blunder by Niemann as early as move two, but the American grandmaster managed to outplay his expert opponent after all to win that game as well.

The Diving Chess competition was the first of several side events that are part of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Finals. Also on Friday, the other four participants of the Finals visited the University of the Western Cape where they met with about 200 fans of all ages, most of them players from local chess clubs in the Cape Town area for a simultaneous exhibition. This event was organized by Freestyle Chess in partnership with Chess South Africa.

Magnus Carlsen (Norway) and Levon Aronian (USA) played a tandem simul, alternating moves against 20 boards, winning 15, drawing one and losing four games. Vincent Keymer (Germany) and coach/commentator Peter Leko (Hungary) stayed undefeated, drawing two games and winning 18.

Among the participants in the simuls were streamers Anna Cramling, Dina Belenkaya, and Niklas Steenfatt. Parham Maghsoodloo (Iran) was present as well and played blitz against many fans for 2.5 hours, taking just 30 seconds on the clock against five minutes for the opponent (and a one-second increment each). He still won all games. Afterward, it was time for selfies and autographs, all in a very cheerful atmosphere.

Earlier in the day, Magnus Carlsen and Jan Henric Buettner gave a press conference at the Silo Hotel. Buettner said he was particularly happy to be in Africa: “I know that the African population, at least the people who follow chess, are extremely happy to have such a tournament here with Magnus and all the other great players. We have eight top players. It’s fantastic, and we’re very grateful and excited to start this tournament.”

Carlsen had been to South Africa and Cape Town once before, during a family trip in 1999, shortly before his 10th birthday. “I’ve always wanted to come back, but it hasn’t panned out, so I’m very happy to finally be back in this beautiful country,” he said. “People keep telling me the city has changed, and what can I say — it’s still beautiful!”

Grootbos, 8 December 2025. The Round Robin stage of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Finals concluded on Monday at Grootbos, with Javokhir Sindarov topping the table on his 20th birthday. He finished on 5.5 points out of 7 games, followed by Levon Aronian with 5, while Arjun Erigaisi and Magnus Carlsen both reached 4.5. Under Grand Slam rules, all eight players advance to the Knockout stage, and the top three held the right to select their Quarterfinal opponents from the bottom four.

The pairings for Tuesday:

  • Javokhir Sindarov vs. Parham Maghsoodloo
  • Levon Aronian vs. Hans Niemann
  • Arjun Erigaisi vs. Vincent Keymer
  • Magnus Carlsen vs. Fabiano Caruana

Two matchups stand out. Aronian vs. Niemann is a direct rematch of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Final in Las Vegas, where Aronian took the title. Carlsen vs. Caruana carries its own long history: the two played the 2018 World Championship match, meeting now at the Quarterfinal stage of the Grand Slam Finals.

The South Africa Finals will decide the 2025 Freestyle Chess Champion and conclude the Grand Slam season. Magnus Carlsen leads the overall standings with 80 points ahead of Fabiano Caruana on 49 and Vincent Keymer on 39. Fans in Cape Town can follow all Knockout matches at the V&A Waterfront, where the official broadcast from Grootbos runs daily from 12:30 p.m. SAST, hosted by Cato Louw, Adrian Endly, and Vidit Santosh Gujarathi.

Carlsen secures 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour title

Cape Town, 9 December 2025. Magnus Carlsen has secured the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour title early. By reaching the semifinals at Grootbos on Tuesday, Carlsen clinched the season championship and the $100,000 bonus prize, while the South Africa Finals – and the $200,000 winner’s purse – remain to be decided. Carlsen’s route to the semifinals was anything but smooth. He started his match against Fabiano Caruana with a loss after a grave mistake. Facing a must-win situation with Black, Carlsen forced tiebreaks, won the first blitz game and closed the match with a second win.

Javokhir Sindarov continued his momentum from the round-robin stage. After Parham Maghsoodloo’s 0/7 in the preliminaries, the Iranian still managed to create a crushing position in game one but let it slip. Sindarov survived, turned the game around and won game two as well, finishing the match 2–0.

Vincent Keymer became the second player to advance. After drawing game one against Arjun Erigaisi, he took over in game two and converted calmly to reach the semifinals. Levon Aronian later joined him by defeating Hans Niemann. Niemann had been on the ropes in their first game but escaped; Aronian finished the job in the tiebreaks.

The semifinal lineup for Wednesday:

  • Magnus Carlsen vs. Javokhir Sindarov
  • Vincent Keymer vs. Levon Aronian
